Why are oral cancer screenings important?
Screening for oral cancer is quick and easy, with no pain or discomfort involved. It's critical for early diagnosis and prevention. It takes less than five minutes and can be done by your dentist or dental hygienist at your regular check-up appointment. Your dentist will be looking for any lumps or abnormalities, red, white or grey areas, and/or tenderness.
At R.A .Campbell Dentistry, we use a Velescope system, which allows us to view the tissues of the mouth through an ultraviolet light. This shows any anomalies in the tissues, which cannot be seen under normal lighting conditions, that may need further investigation by a specialist.
The Canadian Dental Association says that in 2003, an estimated 3,100 new cases of oral cancers were identified in Canada, and about 1,090 deaths occurred as a result of the disease. In addition, people over the age of 45 are most at risk. The good news is that oral cancer can be treated successfully if caught early enough. We have the expert skill and training to detect early signs of the disease and can help you to understand your risks.
Health Canada cites that in Canada, oral cancer is the 13th most common cancer (of the 23 reported cancers).
